I have a relative flying into Phoenix from Detroit tomorrow, and about the time he is leaving, there is some expected bad weather. I want to know how an airline determines what weather is bad enough to fly in? I understand that we can wait until tomorrow to check for flight delays, but I just wanted a general idea of what to expect. Is there a certain mph of wind that planes will not take off or land in? How about snow, rain, sleet or ice? Does it depend on inches? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!
There's lots of variables, and no one specific answer to when/why they cancel. Sometimes it involves snow, wind, visibility, rain, lightning; plus it depends what kind of plane it is and the route it will be taking.
Basically, whenever they determine it's not safe to fly.
