Jessica, American Airlines has not hired any pilots in the last 5+ years... they still have more than 2,700 pilots laid off... You are more than likely talking about American Eagle, and they are a great company to work for from what I hear... other than the long upgrade times...
but to answer the question, no, it is not any harder to become a commercial pilot coming from civilian traning, if you went to the right school... I went to UND, and once I had the hours, I had no problem getting hired to fly...
its only as hard as you make it. i'm a pilot for a regional airline, i went to college and studied to be a pilot. the majority of pilots these days are privately trained anyway. i will say though, piloting is a skill that some people cannot master. some people just don't make good pilots naturally, but most people can do it. i did it and i'm not a genius by any account ;p sex doesn't matter either, i know some women that are better pilots than most of their male counterparts.
I work at a hotel where the AA pilots stay. Granted, there are more boys than girls, but we also house new hires here... and as we go...more and more girls are getting in.
So good luck:)
No.I am an airline pilot and i did not go through any military service. I went to Purdue University where they have a 50 plus year old flight program. You go through the entire program eceiving a bachelr of science degree in professional flight. I received all my certifications through the university. I just graduated in May and have a job with a great airline. Purdue is not the only university or flight school out there. Search around you will find there are quite a few great schools. Its takes a lot of hard work to be a pilot. You have to be dedicated and be somewhat passionate about flying. And sex does not matter. To of my best friends are women and they are airline pilots as well. One of them is here with me and the other is at another airline. If you want to be an airline pilot stat looking now for flight schools.
